Stone Forest Scenic Area Introduction
Hello everyone, welcome to Stone Forest Scenic Area.
It is located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, about 100 kilometers away from downtown Kunming. It is a 5A-level scenic spot, a World Natural Heritage and a World Geopark. It is praised as the No.1 Wonder under Heaven and the essence of karst landforms in the world.
Formed about 270 million years ago, this place was once an ancient ocean. After crustal movement and seawater recession, the limestone was eroded by rain and wind, finally forming dense stone pillars, strange peaks and unique rock landscapes all over the area.
The scenic spot is mainly divided into Large Stone Forest and Small Stone Forest.
Large Stone Forest features dense and towering stone peaks with grand and spectacular scenery. Small Stone Forest is elegant and gentle. The landmark Ashima Stone Statue stands by the Yu Bird Pool, which is the symbol of the Yi people’s Ashima legend.
The local residents are mainly the Sani people of the Yi ethnic group. They have profound folk culture, traditional songs, dances and the famous Torch Festival every year.
